One concert I nearly went to was that of Jan Hellriegel. She released two albums previously in '92 and '95 then went quiet for many years, finally coming back in 2009 (which is what the concert related to).
I do like the first two albums more, mainly because I've listened to them more, but the third one is pretty decent. She knows how to power strum a guitar, so many of her songs feature heavy guitar riffs... which is good! That said, you can swap around the songs on her first two albums and you'd be pressed to be able to separate them again. Particularly strong tracks are It's My Sin and The Way I Feel.
More evocative tracks are Moon's on Fire and Greenstone. More bizarre tracks are Pure Pleasure and Manic. And then there's the song that will mean I will never hear a particular name normally again...

I remember Hellriegel from Cassandra's Ears, her first band! Christ I feel old.
TWIF is a great song, and her high point in '93 I think. Her low point was definitely the interview she shared with Jools Toppand Rima Te Wiata for Suffrage Year and she didn't know what it was about. Later got explained as her being ironic...
Anyway, the guitar sound was very big, and I suspect a fair bit may have had to do with the presence of Mark Petersen, who cut some of his teeth as later co-guitarist in Straitjacket Fits (lead guitarist then of course Ms H's ex, Shayne Carter.)
Er, we were offered the last-minute chance to support Jan H when she played a Thursday night at Sammy's in '93, but we declined for reasons of cockiness and trying to put in some hours on our upcoming Friday gig, with JPS Experience. Asked again today I'd have totally done it.
You definitely need to write a book on the New Zealand music scene...
